Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looks to be something that the seller threw together with a bunch of mismatched spare parts. That fredded-up stem seems to contradict the image he portrays in the discription. Hard to assign a value to something like that- but I think you could do a lot better for $600. Like the poster above says, for a few hunnert bucks, it might not be bad, assuming it rides and shifts good, but I personally wouldn't pay anywhere near $600 for it.

Definately not not worth a "few hundred", it is donation level bike.

If you have to pay for it, less than $100, if any parts are removed prior to selling it for that price, walk.

Old carbon is is not a good investment.

Here are some better deals. No idea if they'll fit you. That Trek and the owner's selling pitch is weirding me out.
Diamondback Podium 3 **TODAY ONLY**
VeloVie Vecteur 100 Aluminum Alloy Road Bicycle with Shimano R500 Whee

Motobecane Grand Tour- Vintage I'd take this old thing before the Trek.

bonus lol post
Trek XO1 Cyclocross Bike

Get real. You can't even get an ancient 30 lb. Schwinn with steel wheels for $100 these days...... The bike in the ad, which appears to be a 2003, wouldn't be a bad ride for a couple'a hundred, if it works well; and if he got rid of the fred stem. Definitely nowhere near $600 though. And I do share your concern about old carbon- and if I remember correctly, I think there were specific issues with these particular bikes?(Or was it with earlier ones?) Those bikes were pretty expensive when new- they were supposedly pretty decent bikes- but the mish-mash of spare parts on this one definitely is a negative. And I wonder what the guy used to remove the stickers?!

That bike is a 1990's model. 1998 was the last year for Shimano 600 components.

from the hodge podge of parts I would say nothing is original. Frame looks like a 2003

2003 Trek 5200 - BikePedia

It would have matching Ultegra parts. The 600 brifters are rare and in demand and can fetch $100-150 on ebay. The campy cranks look older (late 80s?) and I see similar ones on ebay for less than $40. The other parts are nothing special. I am personally wary of older carbon frames because of wear and tear and the fact that technology was not as good as it is today. If it fits and it you love it than offer $300 but I would pass.

Regardless of parts, it's a 2003 paint scheme. It's a decent frame but a little non-compliant vertically. Rides like 2x4.

My wife put 30,000 miles on her '03 5200. It came with an Ultegra group. Mainy of the decals removed were probably USPS stickers.

No, the one for sale has an older model raked fork. But who knows, that's an odd bike. Not worth $600.

Two obvoius problems...
  1. The Shimano 600 STI shifters are 8 speed. This bike came stock with a 9-speed drivetrain. Hopefully the cassette has been swapped out for an 8.
  2. The Campy brakes do not have quick releases in the calipers, unlike Shimano brakes. Campy levers themselves have the quick release pins. So I don't know how you are going to easily remove the wheels when you have a flat.

This is from a 5 second review. In person I could probably come up with more, like whether the seatpost is permanently fused (corroded) into the frame, or if the frame is cracked, or the Campy crankset is sitting (inappropriately) on a Shimano BB, or if the spoke nipples are pulling out of the rims. Etc. I have seen it all.

Assume that the chainrings, chain and cassette are worn out. 99% of the used bikes I've serviced have had absurdly worn out chains, and over 50% needed a new cassette and at least one new chainring. Price out some replacement Campagnolo chainrings before you commit to this.

I'd say the 600 isn't original to the bike (I'd say NOTHING on that bike is original!) Looks like a mix of older spare parts the guy had laying around.

I don't think they made CF frames when 600 was current.

Like everybody else, IMHO the bike is not worth $600. An original Trek 5200 is not worth $600 at this point, so a Frankenbike with so many mismatched parts is only worth a fraction of the asking price.

I'd say $200-$300 as a project if you inspect the bike and find that the frame is in good usable condition, and the mismatched parts are in good condition and resellable. Then, you could pull the offending parts, sell them off, and restore bike bike with a matching group.

I'd ride it.

All the Trek bikes I have seen had the stickers under a clear coat. No way to get them off cleanly. That is what give me pause.

Good catch on the fork. The 2003 had straight blades. I call "junk" on this one, too.

The first bonded OCLV frame came out in '96. The 5200 had 600 components.

I'd trust a shiny new Asian carbon over that any time.

I like the Diamondback Podium that was posted by another member. That looks a much better deal for $650.

OK, on that note I would also consider

1992 Schwinn Paramount PDG 5

2006 Giant TCR C2 Carbon Road Bike Medium

56 cm fuji

Bicycle for Sale - Lemond in excellent condition

FS: 2013 Giant Defy 5 with carbon add-ons

58cm Cannondale Road Bike

Those might be worth considering if they fit

Holy cow, for $300 I would have already bought that bike. The Japanese PDG's are going up in price. Saw a Series 5 on ebay for over $1000. Never selling mine.

Same here. That is a steal. But in that market I'm assuming people are not into vintage or dt shifters someone will get a good deal

Tell us more about your Bianchi. Steel, right? Too flexy?

Why the fixation on older carbon Treks?

I would not buy an old carbon bike sight unseen that has that many miles on it at the premium price the Seller is asking. worked him down? More like he is working you.

The Paramount Series 5 is the bike bike to get if it fits you. At that price, as long as it's in good condition, you can't get hurt if you pay the seller's asking price of $300. But that is Craigslist, and the Seller's asking price probably has a cushion built in for people who like to haggle on price.

seller with 86% rating and 22 feebacks who thinks his bike who thinks he should get close to $4000 for his 10+ year old carbon bike with extras. What could go wrong?
