Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Exercise/Sports Reports - January 10/11 2015

Tell us about your cycling and other exercise/sports activities this weekend. It all counts ... cycling inside or out. Cycling in groups or solo. Going skiing.

Saturday -- trying to work up the motivation to go for a ride. It's gloomy and chilly out there (only +16C) ... not a particularly brilliant summer's day. And part of me just wants to curl up on the sofa. But I'm sure I'll feel more motivated if I get up and start getting ready to go.

OK ... I motivated myself to get out for a ride. Sometimes you just have to get dressed in the cycling gear ... and once you do that, you might as well at least go look at the bicycles ... and when you do that, you might as well select one and take it for a short spin ... and before you know it, you've ridden a hilly 20.92 km.

286 metres of climbing over those 20.92 km ... that's about as flat as you can get in these parts, and believe me I seek the flatness!

I came to a fork in the road ...

My route takes me down this hill ... down to the road you see below ... and then down to the beach. I have tried to climb this hill once, but had to walk. So I figured out another way up.

At the beach.

It's a nicer day today, and I'm feeling a little bit more motivated and energetic ... just trying to figure out where to ride.

How about you?

Standard 75 mile loop.

Foggy- almost scary in spots. I had a blinky, & rode at the back.

Excellent pastry at the bakery stop.

Lagged a bit at the end. I'm going with having flipped the stem down, so different riding position.

The recovery beer was also excellent.

After barely riding in December due to a sick mother in law and me having a head cold, I got back on track last week. I did an 18 mile loop over the Jensen Beach Causway, Stuart Causway, and Sewel's Point Causway, downtown Stuart back home.

Its good to be back to longer rides. I'm hoping to be back to 30 miles within the next four weeks.

Sunday -- feeling a bit more energetic ... maybe it was the sunny day I did a rather hilly 25.09 km ride ... 354 metres of climbing. And I explored some different roads.

We did 40 miles and 2200' on our tandem on Saturday. 39°-42° F. and a little rain. Nancy is still recovering from flu and was plagued by asthma all ride. Actually I think more plagued by her choice of medications than the asthma itself. Sunday she changed medications and we did 38 miles and 1600'. Warmer too, all the way up to 45°-46° and a little rain. We survived the heat and posted 1 mph better average speed, partly the flatter ride and partly better med choices. We're still doing the steady zone 2 thing, so only averaging 13-14 mph. We're both looking forward to having clear lungs. Maybe next weekend.

Ride from a few days ago. I've had computer and internet probs. My last post here took 2 hours!!

I rode along Gorge Rd to Birdwood. The first part was closed to traffic from rock falls in monsoonal weather and the rest closed from recent bushfires, I was fearing a tree might fall on me! I met an Italian world tour rider (didn't get his name) at one of the road blocks and when we set off (up hill) he left me for dead with ease

Old Gorge road down below leads the the dam base.

At Birdwood.

Tree marked for removal after fire, could have been 200 or more years old.

Sorry to hear about the asthma issues ... and hope that next week is better for you. I have found that warmer days are better for me as well.

I wondered how you were doing with all the fires in that area ... and now lots of rain and flooding. If it isn't one thing, it's another!

I'm ok, in the 5th picture there was a house across the road from the pine forest totally black from flames but not strangely not burnt "soooo" lucky for the owner. The rain put the fire out so that's a good thing.

I rode 40 miles with my friend, Don in Austin, his longest ride since an October 22nd heart attack. He is making a fast recovery!

Sunday I rode my usual 25 mile loop. I pushed hard and was slower than the last time. When I got home I did a little research. As a newbie to cycling I am now learning about the differences in cycling in cold weather. I figure if I keep pushing hard now then when the days get warmer I am in for a good surprise about how much stronger I will be

If you push hard now, you'll definitely be in a good position when the days get warmer. My first couple years, I didn't cycle through the winter, and it was like starting from scratch come spring. But when I did keep riding (inside and out) ... such a difference.

I work weekends, so no riding to me. I only got time for some easy run on Sunday. Planned 3 hrs, but got only 2:50, cut some corners on the way back. did 18.5 miles.
