Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm gonna throw my hat in the ring here.... since I have too many bikes and this one needs to go...

I'll sell you my KHS Flite 350 in a 58cm Alu frame with a carbon fork for $300 bucks + whatever it costs to ship it to Phoenix from CO.. I'll package it safely and send it to you in a bike box...

It has all Shimano Tiagra components minus the front derailleur (Shimano Sora) and the Crank (Truvativ)...

I just put new, white Vittoria Saffaro tires on her two months ago...

I would not include the saddle, bike computer or the clipless peddles however... not unless you throw in another $80 bucks

take a look...

Again since I have no clue on this stuff I want to see what others say on that bike, however since I know its coming from someone off the forum it definitely feels alot safer than some randy on CL.

What do others have to say on this offer? As I have to ask for input as I know Nothing about this stuff. However I have to say it looks pretty sweet for $300

Oh yeah, I understand...

She's in great condition... she's been well looked after.. consistently washed and lubed.... Indoor bike.. no time being stored outside...

I think the price is fair since it's $300 less than I paid for her a couple years ago... Some may think that I'm a little high... I dunno.. the price is the price on this here sweet thing...

You said you were 6'1" so I know you'll fit her, provided your arms and legs are reasonably in proportion to your torso, lol.. I'm 5'10" and I rode her a lot and was able to adjust her to me...

she's a good entry-level bike... good bike to cut your teeth on for a year, maybe less.

just PM me if you want more pics or have further questions and I'll get you my email.

Run to bigdo13 with your cash. Get the saddle, computer and the pedals for $80. Even with $55 shipping, or whatever the cost from CO to AZ, that is a very good value.

This is my opinion. It is extremely unlikely you will find such good value so freely offered.

Could you explain the price difference on bluebook? I know I can't just go there and price everything exactly. But I am curious . And Very interested as I know it is a safe purchase and definitely in my price range!

Can I work up to a 40 mile ride + on this?

And honestly what do you think of this vs. Specialized Allez Just weighing my options!!

EDIT: Also I do apologize if by taking a few minutes to see what others say and asking about another bike is rude =/ definitely not trying to come off that way. I just want to make sure and have a solid foundation of knowledge before jumping into my first bike!!! So I have to say THANK YOU for offering this to me, and lets get these few details out of the way first !

The extra 70 or so dollars in my price has more to do with what I purchased her for and for how she's been kept up so to speak and the cost of the virtually brand new tires on her which retailed me $50 dollars for the pair... and Bicycle Bluebook is subjective, remember that...

lol... can you work up to a 40 mile ride on this? My son...I have done century rides on this gazelle... She's more than able to handle anything you're gonna throw at her... that frame is sturdy and she shifts nicely...

I mean, The Speacialized would be a better bike, but good luck finding one, even an older one for $300 bucks... trust me.. I have a specialized Allez, a 2001 compact sport... had to shell out $500 after getting it tuned and putting on certain components... I'm not saying it's impossible, but I mean.. it is what it is...

So should I go test ride that specialized? And just see how it feels.. haha I just have no idea what to do now!

Here is the local listing for the Allez that I am going to test ride tomorrow I think? https://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/bik/4842320765.html

And he said he would take $350 for it without the trainer as I don't need that.

Yeah, I think that would be a good idea...

go give the Allez a whirl, see if it's love at first test ride and then ask yourself what you want to get.. the prices are gonna be pretty much what n what.. so i mean, yeah, I don't think it would hurt to test ride it... I would also compare the component groups, compare the wear on the crank, compare the finish's and compare the overall conditions.. look at how worn the tires are, look at how sharp the teeth on the crank and cassette are... see how worn/dirty the chain is... Just look at the condition of the bike..

At the end of the day it's your call... go with your gut kid.

My take on bigdo13's offer is, it's a good one. If the OP were knowledgeable enough to evaluate, and make minor repairs and tune a used bike on their own, they could maybe do better (by $50 to $100 for something comparable - once Saddle and Pedals are added). But lacking that individual knowledge, it will take luck, and or a mechanic who will charge for his time, to get something comparable on Craigslist. Having the bike set up by someone who knows what they are doing has value - and is by no means to be expected when getting something off local Craigs.

There ARE better deals to be found on Craigslist, but it takes knowledge to find them and separate them from the bad deals. The OP does not have that knowledge - so it would be better to get the bike from a knowledgeable seller who will stand behind it. And that's worth somewhat of a cash premium in real life.

My opinion on Bigdo's KHS: I'm not all that familair with KHS, but that sucker looks almost identical to my old Bikesdirect jalopy* (except I didn't have the fredly adjustable stem! ) While the price might not be bad in-person, when you add in the shipping (c. $100); seat; pedals, you'll be into thast thing for at least $500. Doesn't look so good that way.(I think it was only an $800 bike brand new) No offense to Bigdo, but that seems like a lot for an old Tiagra AL bike. Bet you get the same or better on Bikesdirect for the same money. Either way, ya gotta assemble it, too.

That Allez's sounding good. Test ride it, and see what ya think of it. The price is right! If you don't get that, follow up on any offers you made that were rejected on other bikes...they may not call you, but sometimes if you call back, it gets the ball rolling.

[My old BD was actually a rebranded Fuji frame and fork; and I think both some of the low-end BDs; Fujis and KHS's are all the same clone frames, made in the same factory. For instance, the Motobecane(BD brand) Kilo TT is identical to a KHS Flite 100- and I'm sure Fuji puts out a similar clone model too- I'm just not familiar with it]

I dunno about $500 being the final cost..

I can get it packed and shipped professionally by a bike shop for $85... let's say he forgoes the saddle and pedals (both of which can be had VERY cheaply on CL or even a thrift store for 30 bucks or less) than his final total is $385.... There aren't any bikes on Bikesdirect for that price that are straight up roadbikes with the Tiagra group is there?

I think a lil' under 400 clams to get started in road cycling in 2015 isn't such a bad deal... he can use the rest of his budget to get a few sets of cycling bibs/jersey kits, some shoes/cleats and a new helmet...

Maybe the KHS doesn't have "Specialized" on it's down tube, but matched up with that specialized... I'd bet the performance is just as good... perhaps even my KHS bests that Specialized seeing as how it does not appear to be well cared for at all... also, the seller not photographing the drivetrain side of the bike is usually a red flag on craigslist IMHO... but whatever.

As for info on KHS...it's a company outta Cali.. maybe a lil' more known for it's mountain bikes, but they still make a Flite 350/300 line of road bikes...

So guys when I go test ride the Allez tomorrow how do I know if it fits? He doesnt know the cm of the frame... So all I know is it fits him and he is 5'10" but I know he isnt very knowledgeable on the bike either.

Is there a way to measure it? Or is it just a feel thing? Kind of worried about the fit....

to measure the frame size:

take a tape measure with you tomorrow and measure from the center to the top, i.e. the length of the seat tube, from the base to the top. The base is the round section at the bottom holding the axle (known as the bottom bracket) and the top is where the seat post goes into the seat tube as shown below...

that number in cm is your frame size....

I'd say the Allez (the red one we're talking about, right?) is either a 56 or 58cm. If it's too small, you'll feel really cramped; if it's too big..well....it definitely isn't too big- but you'd know, because you'd be banging the "boys" on the top tube when you straddle it, and you'd feel that you were having a hard time reaching the shifters/brake levers, and feel unnaturally stretched out and uncomfortable. If you can ride it and don't feel ridiculous or uncomfortable, it can probably be made to fit perfectly if it doesn't already.
@bigdo: I'm not saying your bike is bad (it's not- my old Fuji clone from BD was quite capable, too) or that it's a bad deal...but C'mon- finding a decent road bike saddle and clipless pedals at a thrift store (and at a reasonable price no less) is pretty much harder than finding a good bike at a reasonable price on CL. -$85 for shipping; $50 for a decent new saddle; $75 for pedals = $510.... I just think that one can do better for near that money, used.)

Why don't you offer to split the cost of shipping? In selling the bike, you probably never intended to charge shippping because a out-of-town sale would be unlikely. The shipping cuts into the value proposition. Nobody's fault but it does. At $42.50 or whatever, the shipping cost would be a lot easier to swallow.

I think $85/shipping to too high but I get it, that's what is charged. Just unfortunate that this is the case.

I just think that one can do better for near that money, used.)
but see, that's the thing, he can find decent pedals on CL for 20 bucks... that i do know... a new saddle doesn't have to run him 50 dollars either.. lol.. clearly you're used to shelling out serious dough when you need new parts... you absolutely don't have to pay that high... and don't underestimate the thrift shop's and pawn shops... I have found many a pair of pedal's and other components there..You just have to beat the bushes a lil' bit...

If he really wants I can include a lesser saddle, an older Trek one completely free... If he wants t talk turkey we can talk turkey..

$85 is actually cheaper than most people charge to have a bike shipped... it's usually $100 bucks and upwards for a bike this size..

I wouldn't be willing to go in my pockets to ship the bike... I'm not that anxious to get rid of her and besides, $385 is still a deal for her...
