Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Exercise/Sports Reports - January 17/18

Are you cycling ... hiking ... skiing ... swimming ... this weekend? Tell us about the sports you're participating in this weekend, or during the week too if that's your "weekend". Are you able to cycle outside? Or are you cycling inside these days? Got pics?

This weekend -- I cannot ride. No strenuous exercise. Doctor's orders.

So I'll have to live vicariously through you all ... tell me all about your cycling adventures .... post lots of pictures.

Rowan isn't riding this weekend either ... but he's being very active. Up to his eyeballs in cherries. Tis the season here for harvesting cherries ... and he supervises the picking.

Just finished a 20mi 'getting back into the swing of things' ride due to the recent return of warm weather. Pretty much replicated yesterday's ride.

Those cherries look really juicy and delicious. Do you guys ship them? Would they lose all of their freshness in the mail?

I had a coworker who took up cycling during the summers to keep in shape because he was a referee for a minor hockey league during the winter and found he needed to keep active year round in order to make it through the first few games of the season.

So ... I made a cheesecake and unpacked my china and got it all set up. That was the extent of my energy level. And Rowan is putting in another 12+ hour day at work.

I hope others of you were able to do a whole lot more in the way of cycling.

We did my "Barbecue Boogie" 224k route. Only problem was headwind both ways, so it was a long slow slog.

I've had those kind of rides before ... tough!! But I'm glad you made it.

Did you happen to take any photos? You've often got some interesting ones.

Tibor at Maypearl, think that's Brenda, Mark, and Daniel in the background. Vickie and Sharon were also riding.

Mark and Brenda get ready to roll. That's the tandem at right. Note my thick gloves laying there, while Brenda just took her legwarmers off. It was cold at the ride start, but warmed up nicely during the day. This was at Malone, about 100k into the ride, and about 5-1/2 hours into the ride due to headwinds.

I thought you might be there ... one year, I'd like to be there too.

But at least I got to see the People's Choice race on TV last night.

It looks like a nice day ... bright blue sky! Around here lately, that's been a rare thing.

And nice to see Brenda again ... I enjoyed meeting her.

Yes Rowan and yourself should load the Delibago and tour from stage to stage with your bikes in the back for rides.

Finally, some nice weather down here! I headed out to my favorite riding area, Coldwater, TN. Not a cloud in the sky and the temperature 50F(10C). A bit windy, but that wouldn't be much of a problem for most of the ride.

I saw lots of deer; managed to get this photo in the first mile of the ride.

After 6 weeks of freezing rain, snow and cold, cold weather; I wasn't in the best riding shape. Legs cramped on me in the last 10 miles; actually had to walk a hill. (oh, the shame)

42 slow miles yesterday.

Next week could be tough as we are getting carpet installed Saturday and may have to spend Sunday rearranging the house

Week after next and for 4-8 weeks after that I will be out of commission

Sorry to hear you couldn't ride, Machka. That's the worst. Well, not the worst.

We took the tandem out for rides on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday we did 40 miles and ~2100', mostly on roads we hadn't ridden before. We had good weather right in the ride area. It rained hard pretty much everywhere else, so we were really lucky. The shoulders were terrible and we had 3 flats. We used our spare tire and both tubes, but the 3rd flat was only 10 miles from the finish, so we just stopped and pumped every few miles. This was a group ride, but we're riding the tandem solely in zone 2 these days, so we left about 20' early, and in spite of the flats, the group only almost caught us once while we pumped.

Sunday was supposed to be another group ride, but the weather forecast was not good and it was windy. Only one other bike showed up. We had a great time, though. It was mostly sunny in my very carefully chosen ride area and the wind wasn't bad. There are too many weather weenies. 42 miles and ~2100'. Another zone 2 ride. We're averaging ~13.5 for these, hoping to gradually increase that average.

I did 38.5 miles on my hybrid road bike using the Guadalupe river trail and san tomas trail. The weather was 52F with fog and light winds.
