Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New helmets by Trek and Giant

Don’t know if this belongs in this sub-forum but the aero lid is catching on.

Too bad Cannondale will likely never produce one.

I wonder how cool it keeps your head during a century ride in August.

They will find out tomorrow - it is supposed to be about 90F where they are racing, according to the latest forecast.

Racing is one thing, but for the average rider, I don't know if your head will overheat on a long ride.

Regular helmets aren't great looking either, we're just used to them now.

Kittel's helmet looks like it was made by Alpecin. Those enormous vents in the front help keep his hair energized for the interviews...

+1, do most riders really care how aero their helmets are? I want mine to keep my head safe and cool. Those don't look especially cool (temperature wise).

i was surprised by how much air my bell star pro flowed yesterday with the vents open. its not hot yet obviously, but im optimistic that ill be able to wear that helmet for all but the hottest climbing rides.

Aero helmets are getting more popular. I just picked up a GIRO AIR ATTACK SHIELD for and love it. I first wanted one cause I LIKE the different look and attached shield. Then I started reading the good reviews, and thought the below read on aero-road helmets interesting ....

THE VERDICT
........ The most surprising part for us was the difference between an aero-road helmet compared to a standard road helmet, which can equate for as much as what a good aero-road bike can provide, or the difference in going from a set of box-section wheels to a set of deep aero wheels. Since a high-level racer could train for multiple seasons in an attempt to make the gains these helmets can provide given the right circumstances, it doesn’t make much sense for a performance oriented cyclist to pass up such an advantage.

More here ......PRODUCT REVIEWS: RBA TECH: SPECIALIZED EVADE VS GIRO AIR ATTACK

Haha, “energized." Gave me a good laugh.

You’d be right, in my experience. Which is why I actually only use my Giro air attack in the fall/winter.

It’s actually not bad in aero position (head down) because the vents are on the top. The Giant, while a little odd with those massive square vents, actually looks fairly cool when in a relaxed riding position. To be honest though I only ride that hard with my buddies once or twice a week.

Agreed! I hate regular helmets. Love the minimal look, or even the s-works evade. I’m tempted to buy a specialized just to wear that helmet. haha.

Giro AAS is great. I actually have 2 of them (last year and this year's model). Got the new 2015 because I liked the color (blue) and was going to sell the old one, however, the new one (right) is more like cyan-blue than a real blue. I decided to keep both to color match my jerseys.

The TREK looks tight!

I'm thinking of getting an aero helmet (like the Giro AAS) specifically for winter riding, when I don't really want that much ventilation. If I can then use it when temps heat up, so much the better. As far as how it looks, well, if all people can find to make fun of is my helmet, then I'll be light years ahead of where I am now.

i understand that, but can't you just change out the pads?? most i've seen have replaceable pads. the styro/plastic shell are basically untouched by the head anyway, so..... for the right price it might be worth it if the 'ick' doesn't bother you

I have a Kask Infinity that I have been using this winter. It's GREAT for cold weather. You close the vent and no air comes in. It still has open vents in the back for warm air to escape but there is no ventilation through the helmet. It also keeps the water off of your head when it rains. If you get warm, you can open the vent and it is like having a jet engine intake on the front of that thing, channeling the air across the top of your head. I haven't tried it in truly hot weather yet, but I would imagine that while it isn't great, it isn't completely terrible either. The Giro AAS is probably very similar. The newer helmets like the Synthe and the Protone are probably the best balance between airflow and aerodynamics. That's what they are advertising anyway. I will probably buy one or the other later in the year, just to have another option.

The AAS has air enter in the front between the top of the head and the helmet (the helmet is somewhat suspended a couple of mm above the scalp) and is vented out the back, so it does vent air pretty well. The Synthe is actually based on the AAS.
