Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I know a professional bicycle mechanic and one time he brought me back a used team water bottle from one of his European races.
I was like 'gee . . . thanks . . . '.

Well youve changed what I said just a bit, but we will go with your version. You wouldn't mind a guy you don't know touching your sweaty man parts?

I don't buy used bibs, but will buy used jerseys. I know some who don't buy used jerseys for the same reason not buying used bibs?
Cheers

He didn't mention the gender of the stranger....

I think I would pass on used shorts, in any event....

Not all of my snot rockets clear, especially on the mountain bike. I assume others are the same.
As illogical as it may be, I don't wear used clothes of any kind, no matter how well they have been washed.

Even with the savings of not doing laundry, this has got to get expensive. Are you a Kardashian?

Yep, but they won't claim me because I have a job and contribute something to society.

Don't underestimate how beneficial Kim has been. Her body of work has helped troubled youngsters work though dark periods in life, two minutes at a time.

Here is another possibility: I wouldn't be surprised if many of the folks objecting to buying and using used bibs/shorts also are the ones who wash their shorts by hand or by wearing them in the tub or shower. Maybe they wear their bibs/shorts several times before washing them at all. Deep down inside they know they are not really getting them clean. They are willing to live with their own dirt, but not a previous owner's. Those of us who machine wash and dry our bibs/shorts likely are less concerned. A modern washing machine doesn't leave anything behind. Just saying.

I think the main issue is the unknown.
  • Were they worn for two weeks at a time between washes?
  • Was there ever a 'code brown' moment?
  • Were they ever peed in during an insanely long brevet?
  • Did the previous owner have horribly inflamed hemorrhoids?
  • Did they sit neglected in a dark laundry basket, getting all crusty & moldy for a month before they were 'washed' to sell?
And it doesn't matter how good your 'modern' washing machine is, there are some things that never come out. Ask any parent with an infant.

I'm confused - if it never comes out, then it never soils your skin and isn't a problem, neh?
