Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sat: An hour of EM on the trainer.
Sun: 36 miles from Jersey City to the Alpine ranger station via 9W and back. It was in the 20's, slightly windy. There were a few snow drifts that forced us into the lane and at one, right to the yellow line.

I've got to figure out my glove and shoe situation. It wasn't comfortable.

As mentioned in last weekend's report I've been fighting a cold, so I decided to stay off the bike. The most exercise I managed was yard work on Sunday which included reinforcing a blown over palm tree and chopping up the xmas tree for use as mulch. I'm feeling better, however, and I'm hoping for some riding next weekend.

Finally had a weekend with weather that allowed me to ride both days. Saturdays ride started off 30 degrees and warmed all the way up to 32, but it was sunny and we did a hilly 38 miles. Sunday was unseasonably warm at 47 but damp and overcast and it felt colder than Saturday. We got in a fast pace 45 miles.

Saturday we had a very nice ride on the tandem of about 45 miles and 2000' climbing. It was foggy and 34°-41° all day. That was actually nice. We were dressed appropriately all day, only having to doff our jackets before the first real climb. Stayed in zone 2 all day except one 8' climb in zone 5.

Sunday it was raining and a really weird day around here. No cars on the road. We couldn't get a group ride together even begging. We really didn't want to spend the day riding alone in the rain, so we planned on a trainer/roller hour and then weights at the gym in the afternoon. The trainer/roller ride went really well. Stoker discovered how to make her legs hurt really good on the trainer in zone 2. Yay! The gym visit was a bust. Place was closed! Totally weird. We went back home and did 3 sets of 20 one-legged knee bends on a chair.

Now that would have been nice! Rain or no rain, I'd have been tempted to ride if the traffic eased up that much.

And our gym closes at the rather odd time of 5:45 pm on weekends. Weekdays it's open till 7:45 pm which is OK, but I don't understand the early closure on weekends. And they usually have to herd people out then so it's not like the place empties out by 5 pm or something.

Yeah, we stayed home and rode our machines and did other stuff. We don't have a TV. We ride in the rain a lot and we're not real enthusiastic about it any more unless we have some company to share the fun. Safer that way, too.

We did look at our computer in time to see the 1-yard fiasco blogged. I bet a lot of people in this area got drunk and screamed at their TVs.

That's until the races in the park start up....

I haven't bothered commuting because this weather's been crap and I don't want to deal with the ice and slush; I've ridden through the stuff and cleaning the bike afterward isn't fun at all.

Sooner, probably, though the first club race is less than five weeks away.

Actually kind of lucky yesterday, since things had cleared up from the "major" storm we had. But slush was really nasty today - don't see how anyone does it, but they do....
