Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Can you recommend a custom wheel builder?

I'm looking to have a set of wheels put together.

I've found Pro Bike Supply and Fairwheel.

Any recommendations for them or someone else?

I'm looking at Stans 340 and Chris King hubs.

thanks.

Sugar wheel works in portland, OR. She built my enve classics with CK hubs. With my recommendation, she has also built several wheels for people on this forum as well as other forums I'm on. Tell her Nick sent ya if you contact her.

You can go to your LBS and ask them to have QBP build a set of wheels for you.

I'm happy with the wheels I had built by the folks at prowheelbuilder.com--Velocity A23's with White Industry T11 hubs. They seem well-built--at least they've stayed true over the last year and a half. Also the price was great, and they spent some time corresponding with me beforehand helping me narrow it down.

You would be fine on any wheel. Unless you ride like an elephant through potholes.

Shipping on wheels can be high. If you put your city of residence (or a close one if you're concerned about privacy) into your profile, someone might know "the guy" close to you.

I sit around the same weight, no issues with a few thousand miles on them. I think I am on 24/28 spokes.

If you aren't buying locally, I would go with someone with a great national reputation. Psimet has that and his wheels were picked by Velonews as hand built wheels and compared with several high end prebuilt in a test.

It's very easy to build them yourself. Might as well learn this basic skill at some point.

I have heard very good things about Ron Ruff at White Mountain Wheels. He also monitors another online bike forum and he seems like a really good guy to work with. Less than 3 hour drive from Albuquerque.

A couple of the guys on our school team get theirs from Jones (Jones Precision Wheels). Apparently his wheels are fantastic.

Hoops Wheels? I got a pair of archetype elites from them. HOOPs Wheels - Wheels
They also have cheaper hub options with sealed novatec hubs, but they can build with any hub you choose.

I like Psimet's wheels. I bought a pair from him for my cross bike.

But it is funny how it matters who you know. Caley Fretz, then Technical Editor of Velonews, was a regular poster on BF.

Psimet's wheels got the review they got in Velonews on their merit, but absent the BF connection, Fretz might not of even known of them, or picked them to review.

+1 for Psimet. He built me a new rear for my fixed gear. Running straight and true for over a year now.

Heard good things about Sugar Wheel Works, but haven't had a chance to try them.

My LBS (Rex Cycles) has a great mechanic (Doug) who built the wheels on my road bike, that also have been running straight and true for not quite a year (>3k miles).

I recently bought a set of wheels from ProWheelBuilder.com and it was a great experience. Shipping was expensive, but the good price on the wheels and no sales tax helped offset the cost. I am 250# and have gone thru several wheel sets. I only have about 200 miles on these, but super happy so far.
