How long can you smash till you break ?
I Love to get out of the saddle and pound the cranks, with huge power. I usually break around 2m mark. How long can you smash?
Is this trainable ?

When I decide to pull the trigger I can smash out of the saddle with huge power for about three hours. I have a problem snapping my cranks in half.

My supermodel wife actually buys me bicycles so I have something to smash while she recovers. When I dial it up, nothing is safe.

In our regional vernacular, "smash" means " to defecate". So I know of no one who has smashed until they broke, but there appears to be the possibility that one can "**** their brains out". It would seem convoluted physically, but rough folks have said it enough that it must be possible.

I decided to just toss my saddle in the garbage can along with the dork disc, reflectors, and brakes. Wasn't using any of that crap anyway and it just adds weight.
No, seriously though; I can't figure out how to be effective out of the saddle. It feels so awkward. Definitely something I need to learn to do.

You guys.... Well, OK, with a name like "speedjunkie," he was asking for it....
But anyhow, it's my understanding that if you can do it for substantially more than two minutes, it's not your hugest power, or even your second hugest power any more. Of course what you (speedy) describe is "trainable," but while you may be stronger than others, or going faster than others up the same hill or whatever, you're not really "smashing" if you're doing it for an extended period; you're just riding out of the saddle.
I do think that raises an interesting question: how long can you, or do you like to ride out of the saddle? I used to NEVER ride out of the saddle, then I started riding well up out of the saddle now and then, holding onto the bars and sort of stomping on the pedals. I suspect that's more comfortable or natural for some than it is for others, and I remember, as a kid, occasionally riding continuously out of the saddle, like a trials rider, but I really don't do that nowadays - I like to stay lower and more in control. Now that I've tweaked the fit and gotten a slightly longer stem, riding on the rivet in the drops is what works, but I don't think I've done that for more than a minute at a time.

I smashed a spider yesterday. It didn't take much effort. I suppose I could have smashed 200 without breaking a sweat.

Of course it's trainable. Everything is trainable. Not everyone, however. One of my conditioning benchmarks is to be able to climb a 500', about 5%, local hill out of the saddle at LT. Some folks climb best standing, others don't. Don't know why. Skinny people stand better. Took me a long time to get OK at continuous stands, though I could always sprint. On a long serious climb at my limit, I can only stand for about 45" without blowing up. Pantani was great at it.

I decided to smash this morning again. I said what the hell, I'm pulling the damn trigger and going for it. My power was so huge my rear tire kept losing traction and I finally cracked the seat tube at the bottom bracket.
