Added Heart Rate to riding app and calorie and wattage estimates went screwy

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Added Heart Rate to riding app and calorie and wattage estimates went screwy

I've been using Ride with GPS for a couple years now and always knew that the wattage and calories burned were just estimates and on the high side at that, but I just purchased a Mio Alpha HR monitor and tried it out. Riding the same course, at similar speeds and under similar conditions both the wattage and calories burned estimates went WAY up. I'm pretty sure that I'm not putting out 290+ average watts and burning 1,000 kCal on a 16 mile winter ride at 15 mph on very flat terrain and only light winds. I'm a Clyde at 240 pounds, riding a bike that weighs about 30# in full winter dress, and I'm wearing several pounds of extra clothing. I ran the numbers through an online calculator and came up with a more realistic 139 watts and 250 kCals. Nothing weird about the HR data as I was between 130 and 160 bpm 90% of the time.

What gives? Why would adding HR data make the other numbers go nuts? I sent a message to RWGPS customer support but haven't heard back yet.
