Why do so many folks avoid the Bicycle Mechanics forum?
So many mechanical questions here on the 41! Why would you not go to Bicycle Mechanics where the real experts of mechanical issues reside? It almost seems like some folks want company for their misery instead of a solution to the problem.

Okay, so that's true for you and me, but not everyone can be THAT neat. The guys on Bike Mechanics are a bit nerdy (takes one to know one), but hey, that's what makes a great mechanic, right? Seriously, it is a shame that lots of questions get asked so far from the expertise that could answer them.

Because I am here. I know more about bike mechanics than just about anybody here...or at least in the top 5. I rarely even stop over at the Mechanics forum. Btw, the vast majority of those interested in the sport are clueless about mechanics or the design of bikes. Even some that think they know.
Hope that helps. The general public is pretty much clueless overall on any given topic. Pick one.
PS: there is one exception and probably a couple of others as well. But wheel building comes to mind. There are a few that know a fair amount about wheel building and the associated trade offs which can be enlightening. And unrelated...training. There are a few that know about how to train which also is educational.

I don't know... I always see a lot of new threads in mechanics on a regular basis. Seems to get plenty of activity.

I find learning there. I've put up a few threads where I had a question and always good results. Most of the time I read.

Yes, they do get traffic there; I'm not saying otherwise. But so many mechanical questions show up here instead.

Sure, your presence on the 41 makes it a good place to get some resolution to mechanical issues, but mostly of the advanced kind. Someone wanting to learn how to change a tire or how often to lube a chain would be better served over there. Or so it seems to me. Simple mechanical problems can get a lot of snark on the 41 that is largely absent on Bike Mechanics. Not a big deal. It just makes me wonder...
One of the great things about tech forums is the dynamic of consensus. Consensus or trends are hard to refute and can be educational.
PS: a lot of the snark on the 41 can be tuned out by listening to snoop dog. His gansta lyrics put life into perspective.

Of course!
Yes, there is often broad agreement about the really important issues, and that makes you confident in your understanding.

Kit doesn't match
I've wondered why it's named "Bicycle Mechanics" rather than "Mechanical Issues" or something like that. Might someone really think it's for any other type of mechanic?
When someone new scans the list of forums in search of mechanical help, I imagine it might be easy to miss the appropriate forum.
Of course, that's a different issue than long-time members coming here for advice... they do that for grins

Because all the ****** bags hang out in this forum
Joking aside, I have used the mechanics forum and have gotten very good and knowledgeable advice. This is not like the 41. I don't know if I can take that kind of communication in a forum all the time.

The problem with the Mechanics Forum, is that the correct answer is usually given within the first few posts, with following posts consisting of useful info. While here, the first 10-20 posts consist of random guesses, such as "lube your chain", and pseudo-witty retorts, leading to more diverse (but unhelpful) threads.

LOVE the mechanics forum! It's existence is primarily why I joined this site. I don't need to use it a lot, because i can often find the info I need by Googling around....but it sure is nice when you need know something specific to your own needs!
Mechanics; C&V; and Car Free boards are my favorites...but I read and post more here, I guess because it gets more action, and I always get suckered into interesting threads.

Plenty of threads show up here that should be moved. Why aren't they?
