Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

[h=1]Specialized 2015 Roubaix Sport Road Race Bike - great first carbon bike with a comfortable geometry. Shimano 105. BTW with your size, I bet you can find a lot of last year's models with Ultegra or better on them at your price point. I saw a $3300 Roubaix at my LBS in a size 52 going for $2100! Hope it helps. Ride on - smoother is faster! [/h]

This is probably a topic for another thread but in y'alls experience do you encounter more flats, given the same riding conditions, on 25s than 28s? I currently run 28s on my cross check and have had no issues while I watch people on nice bikes with 25s all down the side of the road during a ride. Would I be able to put 28s on any of these? The roads are pretty rough here in Houston and I suck at changing tires.

Statistically I would guess that the more rubber on the road, the more chance of a road hazard flat. But that could easily be completely wrong. I'm sure others will have something more concrete to offer. Personally I ride 23s. Folks generally think they are better than the 19s I learned on, but I swear I can't feel it.

In any case one usually doesn't ride wider tires for greater durability, but for greater comfort. The one thing I have heard recently that would suggest wider tires might be more durable is that higher pressure may cause tires to cut and puncture more easily. Since wider tires are run at lower pressures, that could mean they would be more durable.

You could build a Chinese carbon frame/Chinese components.

You could get under 6.8kg if you do it right for $2000, While still being decently aero.

I don't have much experience with 28's. But I notice little difference between 23's and 25's as far as getting flats. Sometimes I go months without one. Sometimes I get 2-3 in a month. I choose 25s so I can run lower air pressure and it results in a more comfortable ride.

You might have trouble fitting 28's on most carbon road bikes. It depends on the frame, the tire, and what rims you have. Some tires run larger than others. I ride Continental GP4000S tires which I have heard run a little big. My current road bike fits 25's fine, but I don't have enough clearance for 28's. My previous road bike fit a 25 in the rear, but in the front the 25 would rub the top of the fork.

If fitting larger tires is a priority look at endurance geometry bikes. In general they probably have more tire clearance than more aggressive race bikes. I know the carbon BMC Gran Fondo comes stock with 28's. The aluminum version comes stock with 35's.

Houston apparently has a couple of Performance stores. That would be my first stop. They have several Fuji and Kestrel models in your range.

Helpful experience, thanks
the point is that in typical 41 fashion, you're overthinking this. You have 2k to spend. The fact of the matter is that in today's world, if you're buying a new bike, there is not a significant difference between a frame at a particular price point unless for some reason you're getting a heavy discount. Is there a significant difference between a 2k roubaix or synapse or trek or Scott solace or giant defy or... The frames are all very similar. Is a roubaix twice as good as a synapse or whatever else you want to fill the blank with? No. Just get the one you think looks the best or whatever shop will give you the best service. That's my advice.

To be perfectly honest I'm not thinking much at all. I posted asking for people's experience with their own bikes at this price point - or for any helpful info or insight about specific brands or models (this one rides great, that one felt clunky, this one had a weird fit, that one was an amazing deal, etc etc). The thinking will happen after I've received a bunch of input, then start really looking at specifics like aesthetics, components, price, etc.

Bought a new 2013 Trek Domane 4.0 in 2014 for $1700 from LBS. Have been extremely pleased. I rode 5023 miles last year and had two flats. Don't think that's too bad. Ride many rough country roads and the 25 tires make it quite comfortable. I have wanted to upgrade from Tiagra componets just because I wanted to but have pretty much been talked out of it by folks on this forum. The Tiagra's have served me well but will probably do the upgrade to Ultegra when the time comes. Seems I have read that 28's will fit the Domane but can't speak from experience. Just my 2 cents.
