Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rode 3 hours on Saturday with a small group. Told my legs to push down on the pedals but they were reluctant! I hope I don't have some weird disease.

count yourself lucky. The highest point on Long Island is only 400.9 ft above sea level. I could NEVER climb that high without leaving the area!!!
LOL.

No cycling this weekend but I had a mini adventure while out of town...

Quest For The Lost Mansion…
About 6 years ago, in the summertime, our family took a vacation to the Suwannee River State Park in FL. It is a great park with many trails and nearby history. One of the stories we heard was about the Drew Mansion which was built in the 1860’s and whose ruins could be found nearby. One morning we set off to find the site. After several hours of searching in 90 degree heat and high humidity through overgrown trails we were unable to find a trace of the Mansion. Disappointed we returned home. I had expected to find some substantial structure even if in ruins, but after doing a little research I discovered that a fire had destroyed the Mansion in 1970 and all that was left was a family cemetery and some brick work.
Fast forward to this past weekend we returned to the State Park for a vacation and decided to take another shot at finding the Mansion’s remains. This time the trail was much better marked and cleared. After walking for about an hour we came upon the family cemetery. Most of the headstones are gone and the forest is taking over. Somehow we still missed the Mansion site itself which should have been 800 yards back on the trail. We doubled back and came upon a lone picnic table. Thinking that was strange place for a table we noticed someone had tied a ribbon to a tree a short distance in the woods. After following that I saw in the distance a depression. It turned out to be what we were seeking. All that is left is some of the brick walls and pillars. The forest is also reclaiming the area. Anyways, we were pretty excited our quest was over.

This was the entrance to the trail. The last time we were here it was so overgrown you couldn't even stand up. It was just a tunnel of green.

One of the few headstones remaining in the family cemetery.

Forest taking over the cemetery. The bases of the tombstones remain, but the headstones have been removed.

Partial foundation for the mansion.

LOL.
It's not all one hill. We live almost at sea level too, and never went over 95 metres (311 feet). It's just a whole lot of up and down and up and down. There's very little flat ground here. If we go for a ride from home, it's going to be a tough ride ... no chance of going for a light spin in an evening after work.

I remapped the route we did and came up with 227 metres of climbing this time ...
