Sure, if they provide a tangible benefit and buyers accept them. I'm not concerned about the UCI because they don't govern my riding.
But why would you ask this question? Have all the major manufacturers created down tube less models that are on the sales floor?

I've heard that for years. They do have a huge influence on what is made and people buy (As do Triathlete bikes). While you can find a small market for non UCI approved designs - its a pretty small market.

The future of bike frames will be nothing at all. A magnetic field will hold the parts in place. Just by turning a dial the frame size can change. Sram is already working on this, what do you think the wireless group is for ? You have already heard about the magnetic bottle cages, correct? You think there were Retro Grouches already? You ain't seen nuthin' yet!

So this goes for road bikes with disc brakes? Or is that too part of the non-UCI approved design niche?

Perfect example. Rim brakes should be long gone - but they aren't (other than they are a lighter setup). UCI may change and are talking about it.
If UCI does not change I don't think you will see too many road bikes with disc brakes in 5 years. IMO - of course.
