will your next bike have electronic shifting?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've tried it several times and while the shifting is nice and smooth it's not a motivator to get it since it's not that major of an improvement over a well tuned mechanical group.

My next bike will likely have downtube shifters.

The day I need a computer-controlled set of servo motors to move a chain a few eighths of an inch, is the day I'll quit riding!

Bikes are very basic simple machines. It's a crime to needlessly complicate them.

Winter riding with stiff cold fingers.. electronic is the bomb.
Numb fingers after a long hard curvy descent with lots of braking.. again electronic is the bomb
New riders that are not used to dual control levers or people with small hands.. electronic is the bomb

Di2 with a climbing sat shifter... does not get any better.

I'm not against electronic shifting, but it doesn't really grab me. I see the benefit but to me it's not worth the cost yet. Disc brakes seem like a bigger bang for your buck.

Let me tell you a nightmare about electronic shifting!
THANKS SHIMANO! As I bought a left over 13 Giant with Di2 ultegra with 10 speed (Currently they make 11 speed)
When 10 speed rear derailleur broke when I fell and I attempted to get a replacement,LONG BEHOLD replacements are not available.
Not anywhere.....Looked everywhere and cant be swapped with new stuff and work correctly.SHIMANO told me to look on ebay or internet and other than that I am out of luck.
Alternative is too get current gen derailleur and than change to 11 speed cassette and chain and system will kinda function but automatic trim may not work or than also buy new front derailleur.
So Lets see I needed a 250 dollar part to fix this issue and now we are talking 280 for new rear plus cassette plus chain plus front derailleur and the labor to install and programm.Hmmmmm minimum of 700 to 800 bucks.
SO NO ELECTRONIC SHIFTING ever again and I think I will buy Campy next as they always have parts to rebuild.

Are there any features you miss, or can see potential for, regarding bikes and electronics in general?

I'm very happy with mechanical shifting, but considering the fact that I'm not planning to buy a new bike anytime soon, that the prices will continue to drop, and that more groupsets will be available with electronic, then the answer is almost 100% yes.

Oh, oh! OOOHh!!!! ...and that's with equipment which is only 2 years-old -essentially still new. Imagine when this stuff is 5 or 10 years old?!

Meh. I don't think so. Yet another solution looking for a problem.

But I have to give it up to the marketing people in the cycling industry, they know their game. Once again, they've convinced a lot of people that they need some new widget.

Being in a semi-related field myself, I can respect that.

I don't think I'll ever buy a bike with electronic shifting simply on principle. For me, the beauty in a bike comes from the fact that you're using a machine that is entirely powered by you. You push the pedals, you throw the shifters, you pull the brakes, etc. If it's electronic, it's no longer purely you. There's a sort of disconnect between the bike and your body.

But hey, if you like electronic shifting I'm not gonna stop you.

What if it had a dynamo instead of batteries?

I have a feeling that after the newness/"coolness" wears off, even those who bought into electronic shifting will be returning to mechanical in the future.

Well-said! One has to draw the line somewhere. If we're going to let automation take-over, then why stop at shifting? Why not have power brakes and a motor, too?

Exactly. Why waste energy, when mechanical shifting is "free"?

Such complexity, just to accomplish what can be done with the mere flick of a lever. It'd be like having a nuclear-powered tea kettle.

I test rode a bike w/ ultegra Di2 a couple weekends ago and it was fantastic. Cannondale synapse w/ hydraulic discs. So cool. I don't think I'll pull the trigger, I tell myself cleaning the drivetrain and repacking the hub bearings gives me 95% of the new-bike experience at a far lower cost, so I am probably just going to stick w/ my bar-end shifters for a while longer. More importantly I don't have a rationalization prepared to sell the idea to my wife. Might save it for round bday in 2.5 yrs when justification is not required.

Based on what I hear people saying about their experience with Di2, I would have to disagree with that statement.

I have Record EPS on my road bike; I love it. My next bike will probably be a winter commuter and it may or may not have electronic shifting depending purely on budgetary issues, i.e., if I can afford it, it'll have electronic shifting. The bike after that will be to replace my current fixed gear, so no, that one probably (never say never ) won't have electronic shifting.
