    Cracked crown race (CAAD9)

I had a cracking/popping noise coming from my headset, and I found that the crown race is cracked.

Can I order a new one from a Cannondale dealer, or do I need to get the whole headset?

Probably cheaper to buy a new headset. Mine isn't marked, but iirc they are 45/45.

Yeah, but a whole new headset is like $45 and I don't imagine the race could cost more than $10.

    Yes, it's a 1 1/8" 45-45 hidden headset.

Do they sell just the race? In most cases parts of an assembly are not sold seperately.

The crown race is probably available separately from a dealer. But why not ask them, eh? One call vs. a bunch of guesses here. Cannondale also has very quick responses to support questions submitted via their website.

I ordered a shorter headset upper bearing cover (5mm vs. 25mm 'cone') for $10 plus $7 shipping. That was from Cannondale through the LBS. The website response gave me the part number and everything, but I had to call my LBS and have them order it.

Some crown races on integrated headsets are slit through or split. Some Chris King headsets are this way. Are you sure yours is cracked, and not just intended to be split like that.

You can't just take any crown race and fit, the crown race need to match the rest of the headset/bearing.

Would verify that the 'crack' really is the issue, as #rpenmanparker notes, some are sold with race pre split, and this doesn't affect their performance.

Here's my collection of CAAD 9 headset parts. Some FSA, some Token, all good. Which one do you want? I'll send it to you.

The upper race is split (it's supposed to be), but the lower crown race is clearly cracked. Whether or not this is causing the popping sound is another issue.

I've ordered from these guys before with excellent service. Cannondale Road SI Complete Headset - KB002 - CannondaleExperts.com may be more than you want to spend but it's everything you need and an oem product.

I was told by a dealer that I would have to buy the whole thing, which is why I asked for a second opinion.
