Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My Garmin was messing up in regards to distance. In the end, it said 105 miles but Strava said 90, which is what it was supposed to be, so I believe Strava. Because of the Garmin glitch, I was never 100% sure where I was on the route sheet. Got caught out in a steep, windless, hot canyon with inadequate water and it was a real struggle back there, that climb was way way longer than I expected. Pretty woozy & dehydrated and no one else in sight. Started cramping, full-on bad scenario. But eventually made if through that, semi-recovered at the next rest stop.

With the two very difficult steep climbs in the heat, I wound up with too much non-moving time. But my moving time was right on my target time for the event, 15 mph.

In the end, it was 90 miles & 10000 ft climbing. 8:15 on the course, 7 hours moving time. Not my most elegant cycling performance. But I'm happy enough with it, getting familiar with the route will be hugely helpful come event day.

Awesome on the whales and wheels!
Im trying to get the whole 120 mi ride done with no more than 1 hour non-moving time. I'm not sure it's going to happen, though, if it's hot on game day. I'm ok if it's hot but breezy -OR- shady -OR- climbing something 8% or less. But hot + windless + in relentless sun + >8% = I lose my will to cycle. I just stop repeatedly. I'm not tired, my heart rate isn't out of control. I'm just miserable & want to go home. Not that I would ever do such a thing over something as trivial as feeling miserable. It's just something I need to figure out how to cope with. My brain needs to learn its possible to keep cycling under such conditions, it doesn't need to make me stop.

That is brutal. In PHX I usually found it easy to keep going, cuz stopping was even worse than grinding up the desert hills at 6mph. As soon as I'd stop I'd start sweating profusely, so I just had to keep moving to stop that from happening.

Totally correct. Its really hard to get started on a 8-10% grade, hard to get clipped back in. Stopping is stupid. But I think I stopped 3 times on the last climb, twice in the full-on blazing sun. On a 4 mile 8% climb. My VAMs were still good then too. When I was moving, I was still climbing well. I just really really really wanted to stop. I decided not to. And then all of a sudden, I inexplicably did. Strange.

Sounds like a very challenging day, the perfect storm of what puts us through the test of endurance. When you get overheated and short on water, and know that there's no sag available, it starts working on the mind. If you can pour some water over your head or back to cool you down it can make a difference, but not when you can't refill at the next sag stop. Can't imagine all the climbing on top of this. Kudos on pushing through it. Experiences like these will help you during the next challenge.

Ugh, my cats are more on top of DST than I am. When one of them woke me up, I looked at my phone and was surprised to see that it was 6:30, about their normal feeding time. I figured that it must have been pretty foul outside, though, as it was still pretty dark. Stumbled downstairs, saw the clocks in the kitchen and realized my misunderstanding. Thankfully, Anita was scheduled to turn on at 5am, and was already ready for the first cup of coffee.

Was supposed to wake up and go running. Not only did I wake up earlier than I should have, it's raining, so I'm sitting on the couch sipping my coffee instead. Feeling guilty.

Just got above freezing here. I am going to give it a few hours and then try the local crit course around the corporate center. It's a terribly boring 1 mile oval course, but it does have a small hill/rise, and should be ice free. Ice free is the main selling point this winter.

Of course, but never too much, right? That is what separates the ladies from the ladies of the night. I'm sure she is far too refined for such a thing.

But getting back to the topic, who knew you would one day be able to buy a scratch-and-sniff Dura Ace crank?

That's why I don't have a set. Went to my LBS, money in hand, but they turned me down. No Cat 3, no go deep.

So if you drop a category, do you have to turn in your wheels, or are you grandfathered at that point?
