PCAD, go ahead and see the pain guy. I am guessing he will want you to take some pills for neuropathic pain, such as neurontin (gabapentin), lyrica, or cymbalta. They might help with the burning/stinging pain, but I am also guessing you should NOT take these. He may also suggest topical lidocaine or other similar options. These are ok but you probably don't want them either.
HTFU and keep riding.

At least in dogs/cats, there is very little downside and potential huge upside. Few to no side effects and the type of meds that actually may be the treatment for the disease as opposed to exercise, which is a positive thing for sure but not directly treating the problem. The difference being that pain from a painful neuropathy actually IS the problem. The pain is not due to swelling or inflammation or some other pathophysiologic mechanism. Mis-perception of pain is what's going on, and the treatment for it is modulation of the perception of pain. With the problem being somewhat self-reinforcing if untreated.
Of course could be totally different in veterinary med, just very curious as to why you would recommend against them?

Something like that. I think steeper, since I took the inside line which was definitely the steepest but most direct. I have a lot of 15% grades around my house and don't have many problems, but whatever. I mean, I got up fine, but it wasn't easy. The race had 2500 feet of climbing.

Why should he not take the gabapentin, etc? This makes no sense to me at all.

Perhaps. There's a blood pressure component to my pain as well, weight loss and diet changes will mitigate that. I'll probably go see a pain guy anyway, probably a good idea because short circuiting the pain with Lyrica for a couple of weeks may be a good idea regardless, I just don't want any side effects or opiates.
Obviously not all responses are going to be like that and you obviously have more going on with your health. But it seems to me that there's no downside to trying something that has the potential to be simple, safe and effective. I understand "not wanting drugs" in theory. But the downsides to all drugs are not equal.

But I'm pretty confident this will continue to improve regardless. I'll try to see somebody this week.
Time to ride. It snowed here last night. It stuck.
Kill me now.

...tandems, even aggressively priced high quality ones, sit forever on the CL here. I almost bought a couple just for the components, but have thus far resisted.

...corngratulations. To bad there were no podium girlz.
...time once again for my commercial plug for meditative techniques as a useful adjunct in the control and treatment of chronic pain. I actually know a person who benefited a great deal in this regard. Know him quite well, in fact. Well, as well as anyone. I've known this guy my whole life.

Team time trial in Durango, CO. Took first. Started with four, dropped one of our riders within the first mile, hauled ass. Felt like a really fast time but we didn't know how well we did. Low and behold, when results were posted, we won. 13 miles 27.5 average. Pretty happy.
Then I got dropped in the crit and hung on for a mid-pack finish in the road race, which had an extraordinarily steep hill every lap (6 laps @ 5.25m each).
Rad weekend.

Yes, the used tandem market is very soft and has been for a long time. I sold a 10 year old Santana Noventa, all Campy, and felt like I was giving it away. I think I got less than 25% of original cost.

You can buy one and ride it solo. Imagine how fast you can bomb down the hills.
