Crankset won't go into bottom bracket

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Crankset won't go into bottom bracket

A friend asked if I could swap his groupset for the new Ultegra group he ordered. We got a new bottom bracket at a shop and they installed it. When I got home to put in the crank, the crank wouldn't go in. I literally had to get a mallet and towel and hammer it in. Can this cause a problem? I tried pushing the crank in but it wouldn't come out the other side all the way. I had to tap it kinda hard to get it in.

The crank spins fine and everything. I'm just worried that it can cause problems down the road because of the bearings? He had bb30a and we got a $120 BB that converted it into hollowtech

Pretty normal for Ultegra, in my experience.

Yeah I've seen videos where people hammer it in. But it seemed like I had to use more force than them. I tried hammering it on the stand but felt like I could potentially hurt the Carbon seatpost so I took it inside into the carpet, laid it down with my hand on the other side of the bottom bracket and hammered it in a couple times to get it all the way In. Should I ask my friend for the bike back and take it to a shop?

My last build I had to use a rubber mallet with a bit more force than I would've thought when I first installed crank. was 6800 crankset + 5700 hollowtech II BB. It got easier with subsequent reinstalls to check bb torque etc. i don't think I needed the mallet at all the second time around. I chalked it up to resistance caused by interface between spindle and some kind of seal or oring on a brand new bearing inner. If you're worried maybe have the shop check it out for peace of mind?

if would help to know the manufacturer of the 120 dollar BB that was used to covert a BB30 bottom bracket shell to a Shimano compatible one.

if it has inserts to reduce a BB30 bearing's inside diameter to 24mm, then i wouldn't be surprised that it was difficult to assemble. and damage is possible. if so, you'll find out soon enough.

What can you hurt? Not the crank. Possibly the BB. No sweat. Even at $120 it has to be considered expendable. At least the bearings, that is. You did lube the crank spindle ends where they interface the bearings, right?

Put the crank in the freezer before installing it.

All that I've installed required a hefty whack or two with the rubber mallet to get the last inch or so.
