Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Advice on New Bike

Hi guys - I am trying to figure out which of these bikes to buy. The first is the Cervelo R2.5 Chorus. Specs below. Price will be about $3000 US. The second is an Opus Crescendo. Specs seen here...
https://www.opusbike.com/opus.htm Price for this one is about $2500 US. I don't minds spending the extra money if the Cervelo package is a sweeter ride. I don't know much about the Opus line. It is full ultegra groupo with compact carbon crankset and Mavic equippe wheels. Also, with either bike, anything you might suggest upgrading? Thanks for your help...still stinging from my Felt experience, but checking out these new rides today eased the pain a lot LOL.

I am in love with the 2.5. A picture of that thing is like Viagra for young men.

For the Cervelo, I'd recommend upgrading the wheels, but I'd leave everything else, it is Chorus after all, better than Ultegra IMO. This was my second choice bike, so I'm pretty familiar with it. Ultimately I went with a Kuota Kharma, built up with Chorus.

I think with the R2.5 you would be able to get the weight down really low with choice components if that's what you want, but again, there is nothing wrong with the Chorus group and the other components and it is a great start.

I tried Shimano, and it is good stuff, but I like the fact that I can go up and down 3 shifts at a time.

Managed to take the Opus and Cervelo out today. Opus fitted with Ultegra 10, Cervelo R2.5 with Campy chorus. Big difference in feel. Cervelo seemed much more responsive and climbed like a goat. The shifters felt smoother than the Ultegra (although the ultegra might need to be tweaked a bit on the derailleur). I liked the ability to shift multiple gears at once.

Will try one more bike tonite. Argon 18 Helium kitted with ultegra 9 spd group set, mavic cosmos wheels and other carbon bits and pieces ie/ easton seat post, ritchey handle bars and FSA integrated headset. Not as nice a group set as the bikes I road today, but it has been ridden only 2 times and I can probably grab it for about $1800 US vs $3000 for the Cervelo. Will see what the ride feels like.

Thanks for the input guys.

whenever I here people ask for advice about which top of the line bike to buy I always think that most of the time unless you are a gifted athelete competeting at a world class level you could do with a far less expensive bike no insult intended but if you are looking at bikes in the 3000.00 dollar range and know little about the tech a thosand dollar bike will probably suit you well and you can save your money for a cycle vacation that being said If I had the money campy chorus is superior to ultegra

Bob - No insult taken. I have been saving for a while and although I certainly am not at the level you are talking about, I do enjoy riding and figure that while I may not NEED that level of bike, I like the idea of buying a bike that I will enjoy riding for several years. I don't particularly want to spend a huge deal of money, which is why I originally went for the Felt F55, but since that order fell apart on me, I figure if I can afford one of these machines, I might as well get as much input from guys on this board that have a ton more experience than me. That way, no matter what ride I go for, at least I know I have made a relatively informed decision.

Looking forward to whichever ride I end up with. I know I can't really go wrong with any of these bikes, but it is nice to bounce things off others here who are enormously helpful. BTW, are you guys having as nice weather up there as we are in Calgary right now?

Why?? you are the one riding it and dropping the big $$, not some other chucklehead. I'm like the OP, in not understaning trolling for opinions in this price range.

Sydney - guess I shouldn't have looked for other opinions before making the purchase. Didn't think I was trolling with this one, just looking for opinions other than the dealers at LBS. As for not spending the money 'because I know little about the tech', I didn't realize I should restrict my purchase because of my experience. I have been riding mtb for past few years and was interested in stepping over to road cycling. Obviously my experience with makes and models/group sets will take some time to develop. Meanwhile, I figure I can always learn a thing or two about techniques, gear and other parts of the sport from guys more 'senior' than me. Sorry if this came across as trolling....
