Haggling with LBS

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Seems to me that the LBS shops should band together or join some type of consortium purchasing organisation to help achieve the same purchasing power from the manufacturers that the big box retailers / e-tailers have.

There is a mindset here that that consumers who haggle are to blame for LBS ills and no blame sent the manufacturers' way who supposedly sell product to retailers at differing costs?

Basically I'd assume it comes down to figuring out which makes more profit -- make more sales at lower margins or fewer sales at larger margins.

I would never think of asking for a different price than advertised, because I don't want to be a dick. My LBS now won't let me pay full retail because they love me so much.

Yes, i have haggled on various items. too long ago to tell you on what though. but usually on the price of the bike itself, along with a lower price on accessories when buying a new bike. it pays to haggle in the slow season, and when they want to move old inventory out to make room for new stuff.

before i'd haggle at LBS i'd check local pawn shops and thrift stores as well as craig's list. also many LBS's
will have a bike board where locals post bikes and stuff for sale.

Meh! Being loved by a retailer is not exactly what it is cracked up to be. More like you are being manipulated into buying more overpriced goods.

What I am reading here is that, they have all along been willing to take less for their merchandise. All you had to do was ask.
