Make sure your bolts are tight
tl;dr
Am still fairly new to cycling. Went out on my 10th ride Sunday.
At the end of the ride I heard this crazy sound come from the back and started having a hard time pedaling, not too hard. I jumped off and looked, only problem I saw was the chain was off the cassette. I put it back on and spun the tire still hearing something odd. So I picked up the bike and carried it home, about 150 feet.
So today I finally had a chance to look at the bike, strained back muscle Monday so too much pain until today. Not knowing a lot I started slowly spinning the rear wheel noticing a click at the se place on the tire rotation every time. After a few minutes of looking I saw this weird metal bracket in the rear disc brake mechanism.
Not knowing what it was I spent about an hour reading and watching videos about disc brakes. So with my new found knowledge I went back to the bike and started poking around only to realize... I lost my two rear brake pads and the pin that holds them in.
So I checked my front break pin and it was in just fine. Same with my wife's bike. No idea what happened. Also seems that these breaks don't just use a cotter pin like I was seeing in videos, but a screw in pin with a cotter pin on the other side.
Going to my lbs where I got the bike tomorrow to talk them about it. It has been an experience figuring this out.

I generally give my bike a quick once over before heading out and at lease once a week give it a good cleaning. That way you hafve time to really examine the bike from end to end.
I also do 90% of my own wrenching since I don't trust "so called mechanics" when i'm traveling 40mph downhill with only a helmet and 14# bike between my legs.
