Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Worth It Or Not?

The guy is asking $75... group looks like a Tiagra/Sora Mix.... it's a 54cm frame and he says it hasn't been ridden in 10 years... lol

Seems like she would be a no-brainer to add to the fleet, as a commuter... but that dent in the top tube... A) Is it dangerous? and B) Can it be fixed?

It's worth it for the components. I'd be a little sketched out about riding the frame

I've ridden dented aluminum before and not worried about it. That dent is too much dent. Also, how the hell do you dent a bike like that? Fell a tree on it?

If you have a really short and flat commute, maybe. If you need a beater that could be locked outside, maybe. For that price, maybe.

But I certainly wouldn't trust it downhill and/or above medium speed.

Oh yeah, that makes sense. Don't use a roof rack so it didn't occur to me. That's probably what happened.

if something bugs you now, just think how it will bug you every day until you get rid of it

if you have other 9-speed bikes, $75 would be worth it to have the spare parts in a box -- assuming you toss the frame. Offer the guy $60 to roll it out of his yard.

except that's 8 speed Sora...so not quite as helpful.

no! It's not fixable. But if you have a 9 speed bike in your garage you can use the components, just like others mentioned before.

I dunno... my father is actually an expert TIG welder.... I wonder if he could work some magic... but on the other hand I wonder if it just isn't ridable the way it is...

lol, you're that sketched out about it dude?

I've ridden bikes with dents in em' before in absolute treacherous situations and they held up fine... granted, none were dented in quite that spot, but I don't see how this is getting so many folks to cringe and be weary...

I dunno... I dunno...

It's not a bargain if you don't need it.

If the wheels are in decent shape, they'd be worth at least $40-50 on their own, $60 if the rubber's good. Pump, seat post bag, and bottle cage are also worth some money if you can use them.

How can you go wrong for $75?

Not sure of the thickness of C'dale AL. If it were my Klein dented like that, I wouldn't ride it ('Cause they're soda-can thin)- That C'dale looks like more standard AL though- I would probably ride it. If you're not concerned about keeping original, that COULD be creatively fixed, like by welding a split collar over it- or even by wrapping it in fiberglass or carbon fiber. Heck, if you really wanted toi make it theft-proof, a piece of rebar straddling the dent attached by a hose clamp at each end..... But for $75, I'd take it! Beater bikes are fun! (Often more fun than "good" bikes!)

I'd buy it just for the pleasure of taking it all apart on a nice Saturday.

That's a good way to end-up like FRED Sanford.

I'd offer $50, but it's worth more than the $75 in parts.

And, I'd ride it as a Beater/Throwdown (while looking for a nice frame or bike in need of parts, then swap, and continue using it as a Beater).
