Anyone paid big money for a motion-capture bike fit and regretted it?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That's just it- oftentimes you don't- or may be a combination of both. I believe that a lot of people go in for a fitting, and then after time, think that it was a great benefit- but in reality, it was just their body acclimating- which likely would have happened anyway.

Thank you. My sentiments almost entirely. I also enjoy my fit so much as to wish to recommend it to others.

Seat post length and saddle setback/offset, stem length, stack height and stem angle are all highly adjustable so frame size is non critical and paying a lot for fit ill advised if you have time to experiment. As you fitness changes your fit will change. Post a photo or video of your fit here and you will get all the fit advice you need, and more.

I did the BG fit... video and computer... but it is just a tool and only as good the the guy using it....
other things were involved, there was a 20 minute interview before we even went into the fitting room...
talked about all previous injuries, any surgeries, my experience level and goals...
then there was a pt session where my range of motion, flexibility and alignment was checked...
then the bike ride sessions (there were several one after each change) I also received a copy of the report with frozen frame images showing me the before and after body positions and list of every setting and body angle for future reference and a free follow up session a year later to make any adjustments needed with improvement in my ability and flexibility...
I have no complaints and feel it was money well spent...

Disagree partially. The difference between a saddle's height and fore/aft position being right versus wrong can feel like night & day within a cm for each.

Reach is something that can change over time with adjustments, acclimation, increase in flexibility...

A good fitter should be able to discern, but you need to provide medical history as well. Nobody is going to crystal ball your accident/injury/medical history.

...and IMO, a fitter ought to be somewhat informed in terms of orthopedic /anatomical stuff. I honestly don't know how typical that is...What I do know is the shop I go to has worked with some seriously injured people (a certain multi-amputee veteran comes to mind) to fit and build some rather interesting bikes.

Yup. I didn't want to waste time or risk aggravating, and possibly worsening old injuries.

I would agree. Add to that the fit one might want changes from bike and event. Its a bit like I like to adjust my car seat on long drives. Some great bike fitters just look at you and talk to you and find the ideal.

You can do it yourself cheaper, but the result won't feel quite the same?

Agreed! But those thongs [<--- that was completely a typo for "things"- but I'll leave it, considering the references in recent posts ] are SO easily tweakable. And since everyone has different preferences in those things, it's probably better to experiment and try different things, until you find what works for you. Seat-height- probably the most important consideration, is a very easy concept to grasp- probably the easiest aspect of bike fitting to both learn "what is right", and to adjust.

I have these shorts with chamois that go under my PI Amfibs- for Winter. I'm not liking them, they bunch up.

I paid $200 for a retul fit. Ended up with an IT band problem that wouldn't go away and eventually went back to my old position.
