Re age:
All of the riders I know over 45 are younger in fitness and mental outlook than many 20- and 30-somethings I know. Most of my facebook feed is made up of old high school classmates and cyclists. Most of my old football teammates look like they couldn't run 40 yards in 4 minutes any more.

There can be many reasons to join and ride with a club. I originally joined a club to learn about the roads that were most suitable for cycling. I don't especially enjoy riding with a very large group but it turned out with a choice of distances for each ride, I was not amongst large numbers except at the very start. The best reason to be a part of this particular club is that it spends considerable time and money on cycling advocacy and has an ongoing relationship with local police and traffic/road authorities. Motorists in my area are courteous and patient, due in part, likely, to sustained advocacy over a long period of time.
Recently, some traffic mastermind had a highway department install rumble strips on a state road that had no shoulder which forced cyclists to ride further toward the center of the road. The club made it known to the state highway department that this was dangerous for cyclists and those rumble strips are now filled in. This quick response is possible by being on good terms with those responsible.
