There is this guy that always passes me how do I beat him?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm 6'2", and when I was at 145 lbs, in my running days, I looked like a death camp survivor.

"1. Loose weight to help with hills, where even a 1% false-flat has significant impact. I'm also 5'10", and while I weighed 185 pounds last April I'm now 139 which would be a 33% W/kg ratio improvement if my power was the same which it's not - I'm more powerful for all durations a minute or longer and unchanged below that. If you can't see ribs, sternum, and veins you're not thin by cycling standards."

You lost 46 pounds in less than a year? *boggle* Are you sure you don't have the Ebola?

I'm 5'9" and 159 lbs, which is very light for me. I've been muscular all my life, usually closer to 170. At this weight, I look quite thin - I have a big frame. My girlfriend forbids me from losing any more weight, and I am not sure I want to - even if meant going faster on the bike.

Are you a pro rider or something?

It's funny because for years I was into rock climbing and strove for a very strong and muscular upper body and did not want extra mass in my legs. Now that I don't climb anymore, my body has been moving in the opposite direction with all the bike time.

Instead of worrying about how to beat him, work instead on your reasons for not beating him.

"I was on a recovery ride."

"I dropped my water bottle."

"Today is my zone 2 day."

"I dropped my chain while I was dialing it up to 400 watts." (the Andy Schleck defense)

"I was on my way back from my 200k brevet."

"Today is my small chainring day."
