If those 27 x 1 3/8 are kenda cross tires, they're actually a good deal narrower than that. A pasela 27 x 1 1/4 is fatter than the kenda.

I have a 1985 Schwinn Le Tour Luxe. I have replaced the bars, stem, levers and rear derailluer. The 27" wheelset needs replacing. It wears new gatorskins.

I'm still using a 7 speed drive train with my suntour shifters. I've used the same shifters on a 9 speed setup, and they worked a charm. Friction shifters aren't picky.
