I managed to fix it. I unscrewed the 3 screws on the bottom and jiggled the cable free, then put them back. now it is back to normal.:)

universal gear cables come with a mountain bike...

universal gear cables come with a mountain bike barrel fitting at one end and a road bike fitting at the other so you just need to cut off the end you dont want.
