I think most people will always say drops usually look better. But drops and risers are complete opposites in terms of functionality. You need to decide based on the type of riding you will be doing.

If you are skidding with 48/16 then I wouldn't go bigger than a 17t cog(unless you like spinning). It is just easier to get the hang of it with the least gear inches, I've never even tried skidding...
