Ah, a post I can finally answer! I'm off in a month to spend 6-8 months cycling across Europe by a nicely meandering route - hopefully skirting anything too tall! Should be an eye-opener; 50km is...

So what's the verdict - will wearing cycling underwear under regular shorts or pants be the equivalent of wearing cycling shorts (either lycra or those double layer ones) in terms of comfort?

I've already got a 11-32 rear cog. If I remember playing round with gear calculators I don't think increasing it to 34t will give me the change in gearing that I'm after.

Alvio vs Deore crankset - quality?

Hey all,

The little I do know about bikes certainly doesn't extend to componentry. My current bike has a 52-42-30 Sora crankset but I'll be touring overseas so I want to change it to something...

Cycling underwear

Padded underwear strikes me as a great idea - cheaply make your favourite looking shorts or pants bike-friendly - but it doesn't seem to be sold in many places. Has anyone used it before? Is padded...

Hi all,

I'm looking at what locks I should get for my new tourer and am interested in what has been tried, tested and recommended.

So far I'm thinking of getting a long (6ft) cable lock to run...

I'm not sure of the terminology but at the front, right next to the axle, there are two holes on the metal. I think that the bottom ends of a rack is meant to go through these holes. Perhaps 15cm...

42L at the front sounds like some pretty large panniers. Are the panniers at the front specifically marketed as front panniers, or do you use rear ones at the front as well?

Pannier size

I'm also curious as to how much room I should have in my panniers. I'll be touring for at least 4 months, possibly up to 10 months. I'm eyeing a pair of Tioga rear panniers that hold 47 or 52 litres,...

Front racks

Hi all,

Over the next couple of weeks I'm equipping my new Mongoose Pro Randonneur for touring Europe next year. I've looked at some racks the last couple of days. The most suitable (ie. cheapest...

Hey guys,

Thanks everyone for their input so far. Based on what's been said I think I'll err on the side of caution and go for some lower gearing. If I get the gearing changed in the shop before I...

How do you work out what speed the bike will top out at? Is there much difference between what is reached with an 44-11 combo and the 52-11 that the bike comes with?

I should add that I'll be camping and cycling for a number of months, so although I haven't figured out exactly how much I'll be taking, based on pack lists I've seen the load will probably be around...

Hi,

I'm after a pair of rear panniers. I'll have some waterproof covers, so that's not an issue. I don't pack particularly light, so size is important. And $$$ is VERY important - they've got to...

Do I need a lower gearing for touring

Hey guys,

I'm planning on cycling round Europe (the flat parts) next year. I've put a deposit on a 2003 Mongoose Randonneur which is still at the shop. I'm new to all this but I've read stuff...
