I used a 53 tooth chainring with a 12 up cassette...

I used a 53 tooth chainring with a 12 up cassette from when I was a "racer", now it's a 52 with an unused 13. The 39 gets more use as does the 25 at the back. Next will be a compact.

No problem, I would put the gears on the small...

No problem, I would put the gears on the small cog and small chainring so the springs are not under tension. If you can take the weight of the tires thats a good thing too.
