Nothing will tell you how much charge you have left but they can tell you how much you've used. I'd recommend a cycle analyst, they are a great tool and do a lot more than just what your looking for.

Hub motors and external motors are very different it depends what your using it for. If you are going on trails i'd say use this if you are commuting I say get a hub. Also a hub kit is a lot easier...
