You're correct that the layers exist, per se, but over a much smaller area. The polar jock-type garment reduces bulkiness and keeps the guys closer to the body. Other arrangements/products also work...

These are good products, but our research and feedback has found that many guys prefer the warmth and comfort of the polar jock because it reduces the number of layers one needs (think Michelin man)...
