TransitBiker - I was in the same boat as you this Summer. I ended up getting a Bianchi Volpe Disc. Increased my average speed from 12mph to 16mph and it's much more fun to ride than my Trek Allant....

You can ride pretty much anything on a 2 mile commute. With the hilliness, you'd definitely want something with multiple gears...probably a triple crankset up front, with an 11-32 set in the back.

It's all about layers. My personal record is 9F...it typically doesn't get much colder here.

Get some good gloves and warm socks and don't be afraid to put on some ski goggles to protect your eyes.

Medium weight, and make sure your shoes aren't too tight! I ride with medium weight and vented running sneakers down to about 15F and my toes are fine after 30 minutes. Loosening the laces was key....
