If the rim is kosher and the old wheel is de-tensioned/etc properly, I don't see any big prob with it. Particularly if the rims are nice enough to save. Is this your HED rear wheel?

1) stick with a narrow road tire that will slice through the crud to the pavement...

Yeah, considering that I was *HOPING* for nasty slop to ride in, the SS probably was the better choice. Especially since it also has disc brakes. I'll be bringing BOTH to provincials on Sunday!
