When I commuted, I would wear liner shorts under some synthetic hikey pants, sometimes, for appearances... but I'd get so sweaty/nasty in non-cycling clothes that I dropped...

It doesn't go very deep. If what you see is all you get, I think it might actually be "better" to use a longer compression plug. This thing looks like it only goes about 3/4" in.

I don't need to do anything - I'm perfectly competent in my pedals. Having had my pedal release in a sprint, I definitely prefer a secure pedal to one that feels sloppy.
