I'm new to cycling as well but I don't know of any runners who don't count treadmill miles in their logs. Some of the best marathoners I know do the bulk of their training on a treadmill.

I personally think powering up a short steep hill is not as tough as a solid mile long grade gaining a few hundred feet. If you can do that on a single speed, you're better than me.
