I'd be concerned with the recommendation of a mtn bike for commuting, unless your commute involves riding off-road. I'd consider upgrading to slick tires if you're riding on pavement.

I've had good luck with a tubing cutter, too. I think the key is to not crank down on the screw too hard and take a round file to the inside afterwards, if necessary.

Cut the top tube and downtube, both right where they meet the seat tube. Then spread the rear triangle out to a foot or more. With a seatpost & saddle you'll have a fine stool for your shop.
