I just doubled up the tape in the area I wanted to clamp and tightened it from there. No shims required. As long as you don't put all your weight onto the lever, you should be fine.

As long as you don't plan on taking your shirt off in public after the ride bibs are the way to go. Why would you choose less backside coverage and possible slipping issues?

IMO bibs > shorts
