Good point, it important to think of a pedal-shoe "system".

A stiff-soled shoe can compensate for a small platform pedal or a large platform can compensate for flexible sole.

Pick your poison: bigger pedal platform or stiffer soled shoe (or both).

Either strategy can be useful for addressing hotfoot.
