I disagree with recommending a used bike to a newbie. Used bike+newbie is just a bad combination, since they don't know what to look...

My wife's old bike has older Sora thumb shifters. They shift cleanly and reliably.
Shifting is all about maintenance. Poorly setup Dura-Ace can shift badly, well maintained 2300 should shift...
