It gets messy quick, but that's nothing that a rag and some isopropyl alcohol won't fix.

I also tried the dry stuff once (wax based) and I didn't like it....

I rode a standard crank and a 12-25 cassette for years and switched to compact + 11-23...

The advice I was had was given with respect to the integrated STI shifter/derailleur combo. You're probably right.

Atleast the fd was cheap, so it isn't a major loss.

Works fine with a 6600 rd I had lying around. Since the cable pull for the front is different (or so i've been told), I had to buy a 5700 105 fd.
