So I talked with Paul Sadof of Rock Lobster again this year at the San Diego Custom Bike Show and his personality and knowledge is just amazing... He had 5 bikes on display and all were beautiful......

I think a cross bike is head and shoulders above a "road" (modern racer) bike for long rides/tours... The reason is a lot of cross bikes are designed a bit more relaxed with a little longer head...

pretty much ALL cross bikes use a compact of some sort... Most are sold with a 50/34, but you may find a lot of the racers have gone down to a 46 for thier big ring...
