I ride about 25-30 miles a day in New York City, so any bike is a beater for me. The only difference is that my current "beater" is not really suitable for the conditions I will be facing abroad.

Yeah for the CX bike. Nay for the disk brakes - hate them, for numerous reasons. The only issue is the geometry - CX bikes are not really built for long rides.
