I'd do paint as you say you can easily change the wheels later, paint not so much. You're going to hear a lot of "it's a tool not a jewel", but if you really plan on having the bike for a long time...

Nope he rode the OCLV carbon in 1999, last aluminum would have been Pantani the year before in 1998 on an aluminum Bianchi. Ullrich also won in 1997 on an aluminum Pinarello.
