I don't own a front rack and pannier set (spendy), but when I've ridden them I've really liked how they help balance the load and keep the weight low.

Yeah, it's the wickable thing. You don't have to spend a ton, but cotton and poly aren't great for long rides, so if you do wear them, bust out the baby powda.

I used to work for a bike charity, and the thing about those Kulanas is that once they start to fall apart, they just don't stop. My suggestion is to cut your losses and harvest for parts.
