Not trying to persuade you in any direction.. but what I do is throw my everyday/carry stuff into one of those cheap drawstring backpacks.
I just drop it into the trunk and leave the trunk fixed....

I use one of those 'give-away' draw-string backpacks and simply drop it in a trunk-bag.
The same concept, just clunkier with a seat-post rack and trunk bag.
