IMHO, it's a great stone for the kitchen. I use mine for sharpening plane blades.

I'm pretty sure it's the latter. The bike shop guys mostly deal with mountain and hybrid bikes. Their road bikes are all relatively modern. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think that they're trying...
