If you don't want to replace the spoke protector you can drill holes straddling a couple of spokes and twist tie it in place. Don't leave home without it.

I gave up on wax years ago. Too much trouble for no gain.

It will only help a little, but you can put a 33 on the front. With a 9 speed mountain RR Der. you can go to a 34 rear cog. I don't know what's available in 10 speed, but a 14 34 would be great....
