I don't know what "hipster bike party" means, but San Francisco has their Sunday Streets events once a month Spring through Fall. San Jose has a similar event, but I think only once a year.

This is the best century ride on the San Francisco peninsula (starts at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills and rides to the coast and back). Who's in? I've done it 4 times and will be back again...

If you're going to lock the bike up to bike racks or parking meters with a heavy duty lock, then a metal frame will be more durable. Metal bikes are also less attractive to thieves.
